When you search for a pet cremation provider on this site, you deserve to know exactly how results are ordered and why certain providers appear first. This page explains everything — no fine print.

The Short Version

Results are ranked by a combination of distance from your location, rating quality, and verification status. We do not accept payment for higher placement. A provider cannot pay to rank above another provider. Full stop.

How Search Results Are Ordered

When you run a search, we rank providers using three factors:

  • Distance — Providers closest to your location appear first by default. You can sort by rating or filter by service type using the filters on the search page.
  • Rating — Providers with higher average ratings rank above providers with lower ratings when distance is roughly equal. We require a minimum number of reviews before a rating affects ranking — providers with one or two outlier reviews don't unfairly dominate.
  • Verification status — Verified providers (see below) receive a modest ranking boost over unverified listings with equivalent distance and ratings. This reflects the fact that verified providers have confirmed their contact information and listing accuracy.

We intentionally weight distance heavily. A great provider 30 miles away is less useful to a grieving family than a solid provider 2 miles away. Our goal is relevance, not prestige.

What "Verified" Means

A Verified badge on a provider listing means the provider has claimed their listing and confirmed the following with us:

  • Business name and legal operating name
  • Physical address and service area
  • Primary phone number and website URL
  • Services offered (private cremation, communal cremation, aquamation, etc.)

Verification is not an endorsement. It means the contact information has been confirmed by the provider directly. We don't inspect facilities, audit operations, or certify quality. What we can confirm is that the phone number on the listing is real and that the business acknowledged the information is accurate.

Unverified listings are sourced from public data (see below) and may contain outdated information. We flag these clearly so you can decide how much weight to give them.

No Paid Placement — Ever

We do not have a "sponsored" tier, a "featured" tier, or any other product that lets providers pay for higher search rankings. No provider has paid us for placement, and we don't intend to offer that.

Why? Because our value to families depends entirely on trust. The moment rankings are purchasable, the directory becomes an ad platform — not a resource. We've watched that happen in other verticals and it consistently makes the product worse for users.

Providers can pay to claim and manage their listing (updating photos, responding to reviews, adding pricing). That fee covers our operational costs. It does not move them up in search results.

Our Data Sources

Provider listings come from three sources:

  • Google Places — We source initial business data (name, address, phone, website, reviews) from the Google Places API. This gives us broad coverage across the United States, including many smaller providers that don't have a strong web presence.
  • Provider-submitted information — When a provider claims their listing, they can update any field, add services, upload photos, and set their pricing. Provider-submitted data takes precedence over Google Places data.
  • User reviews — Families who have used a service can leave reviews directly on our platform. These reviews are separate from Google reviews and are moderated before publication.

We do not guarantee that any data sourced from Google Places is current or accurate. We try to refresh public data periodically, but a provider may have moved, changed their hours, or updated their services since our last pull. If you find an error, please use the "Suggest an edit" link on any provider page.

How Reviews Work

Reviews on Pet Cremation Place come from two places:

  • Google reviews — We display a provider's Google rating and review count as sourced from the Google Places API. We don't moderate these and they reflect Google's data.
  • On-site reviews — Families can submit a direct review on any provider page. These are held for moderation before being published.

Our moderation process for on-site reviews:

  • We read every review before it goes live.
  • We remove reviews that contain profanity, personal attacks, or appear to be spam or competitor activity.
  • We do not remove negative reviews because a provider dislikes them. A genuine one-star experience is published.
  • We do not allow providers to pay to remove or suppress reviews.

We're a small team. Moderation happens within a few business days, not instantly. If you submitted a review and don't see it yet, it's likely in the queue.

We're a Directory, Not a Provider

Pet Cremation Place does not perform cremation services. We don't have a financial relationship with any specific cremation provider. We're a directory — the same way Zillow doesn't sell houses, and Yelp doesn't run restaurants.

This matters because it means our incentive is to help you find the right provider for your situation, not to steer you toward any specific business. We make money when the directory is useful enough that providers want to be listed and verified — not when families choose Provider A over Provider B.

How Providers Can Claim or Update Their Listing

If you're a cremation provider and you see your business in our directory, you can claim your listing. Claiming lets you:

  • Correct any inaccurate information sourced from Google Places
  • Add your services, pricing, and photos
  • Respond to reviews left by families
  • Display the Verified badge on your listing

To get started, visit your provider page and click "Claim this listing," or go to our provider info section for details.

If your business shouldn't be in our directory (permanently closed, different type of business, etc.), contact us and we'll remove it promptly.

Questions?

If something about our ranking methodology isn't clear, or you believe a specific listing is inaccurate or harmful, please reach out. We take both seriously.
