There are dogs, and then there are dogs who make you question everything you thought you knew about intelligence. Duchess was the second kind. She didn't just live with her family in Denver — she *managed* them, quietly and brilliantly, with those sharp amber eyes that always seemed to be running calculations.

Two hundred words. She knew over two hundred words, and honestly, her family suspected she understood even more but was choosing not to let on. That felt very Duchess — strategic, a little mysterious, always one step ahead.

She herded the neighborhood children like it was her civic duty, circling them at the park until they were where she decided they should be. The kids thought it was a game. Duchess knew it was necessary work, and she never once apologized for it.

Colorado's trails were her truest joy — the rocky switchbacks above treeline, the pine-shadowed paths near Evergreen, the ones that made her nose go electric with everything the mountain air carried. Her paws knew those trails the way her family knew her: completely, and with tremendous love.

She genuinely lived for:

• Solving problems her family didn't know were problems yet
• Keeping the neighborhood children in acceptable formation
• Any trail that climbed high enough to see forever
• The refrigerator — especially the cheese drawer

She was smarter than most, more loyal than any, and Denver's trails feel a little quieter now without her leading the way.
